Summary

The Scarlet takes place in the 1640s in New England, and immerses the reader in the then-Puritan society of Boston. The novel’s protagonist, Hester Prynne, committed adultery against her husband, resulting in a child named Pearl. As her husband planned to move the family from Europe to America, he sent Hester ahead. The husband was presumed dead, and Hester had a brief love affair with an unknown man. Prynne, in fact, refuses to name her lover, saving the man from public shame. Hester is forced to wear a large, scarlet “A” on her dress as a public shaming for her adultery.

Roger Chillingworth, Hester’s husband, reveals himself to her—but refuses to take her in. Hester is forced to raise her child on her own while Chillingsworth destroys himself physically through bitterness and unforgiveness.

The town tries to take Hester’s daughter away from her, but the minister Arthur Dimmesdale steps in, allowing Hester to keep control of Pearl. Dimmesdale, obsessed by guilt and self-flagellation, sparks Chillingworth’s suspicions, and moves in with the priest. At this time, he discovers that the minister was Hester’s secret lover and the father of Pearl. The wicked husband proceeds to slowly poison the priest.

Hester finds out, revealing Chillingworth’s identity to her lover. The priest, overcome with guilt, publicly reveals his status as Prynne’s lover and, without options due to his status in Puritan society, kills himself on a gallows in front of the town.

Hester leaves for a time, but returns to finish her life in Boston sans her daughter who, it is assumed, married and moved away. Hester never removes the scarlet letter from her dress.

The Scarlet Letter was the first American masterpiece to deal with adultery, sin, redemption, and religious hypocrisy in America. The key idea is hypocrisy in a malformed Christian way of thought: that every sin must be punished in full. Paradoxically, every human being is a sinner. Hawthorne attacked popular Christianity’s lack of forgiveness and grace, deconstructing the walls society put up to trap individuals like Hester Prynne, who received shame where grace was due.

He also was the first to describe the disparity as nothing less than “a powerful incumbent protection plan.”

Cohen emphasized the disparity by standing next to a cutout of Governor Pat Quinn with a small stack of just 5,000 signatures compared to Cohen’s hefty stack of more than 130,000 signatures. “Why should an independent candidate, like me, have to come up with five-times as many signatures? It’s just not fair.”

Cohen says he also expects Governor Quinn and his team of lawyers to challenge his petitions. Cohen noted, “I believe that the Governor and other career politicians will do all they can to limit the choice of candidates that voters have by trying to knock me off the ballot.”

Cohen will file his petitions with the Illinois State Board of Elections in Springfield at 3:30p.m on Monday afternoon.
